Section 501.1/Exhaust Systems Scope

IMC 501.1 establishes when mechanical exhaust is required for specific room types including toilet rooms, kitchens, and parking garages.

What this section requires

Mechanical exhaust is required for spaces where contaminants are generated that cannot be adequately controlled by general ventilation alone. Required exhaust locations include commercial kitchens, toilet rooms, bathrooms, parking garages, laboratories, and spaces with specific hazards. The exhaust rate must be sufficient to maintain the space at a negative pressure relative to adjacent spaces to prevent contaminant migration. Exhaust air generally cannot be recirculated.

Why this section exists

Certain spaces generate concentrated contaminants (cooking grease, toilet odors, vehicle exhaust, chemical fumes) that must be captured at the source and discharged outdoors. General supply ventilation alone cannot adequately control these contaminants. Dedicated exhaust systems ensure that pollutants are removed before they migrate to adjacent occupied spaces.

What plan reviewers look for

Plan reviewers check that every space requiring exhaust (per Table 403.3 and Chapter 5) has an exhaust fan or connection shown on the mechanical drawings. They verify the exhaust rate, discharge location (must be outdoors with adequate separation from air intakes), and that makeup air is provided to replace the exhausted air.

Common violations

Toilet room exhaust not shown
A toilet room or bathroom is shown on the architectural floor plan but has no exhaust fan or duct connection on the mechanical drawings. This is one of the most common mechanical plan review comments.
Exhaust discharge too close to air intake
The exhaust fan discharge location is shown near an outdoor air intake, risking re-entrainment of contaminated exhaust air into the ventilation system. Minimum separation distances apply.
No makeup air for exhaust system
A kitchen hood or large exhaust system operates without a corresponding makeup air system, creating excessive negative pressure that affects door operation and comfort in adjacent spaces.
Compliance tip
Cross-reference the architectural floor plan with the mechanical exhaust layout. Verify every toilet room, kitchen, janitor closet, and other required-exhaust space has a duct or fan connection. Show exhaust discharge points on the roof plan with dimensions to the nearest outdoor air intake.
