Section 604.1/Accessible Water Closet Clearances

ADA 2010 Section 604 covers accessible toilet clearances including the 60-inch clear space, grab bars, and fixture positioning.

What this section requires

The accessible water closet must have a clear floor space of at least 60 inches wide (measured perpendicular to the side wall) and 56 inches deep (for wall-mounted) or 59 inches deep (for floor-mounted). The water closet centerline must be 16 to 18 inches from the side wall. Grab bars are required: a 42-inch minimum bar on the side wall and a 36-inch minimum bar on the rear wall. The toilet seat height must be 17 to 19 inches above the finished floor.

Why this section exists

Toilet transfers are one of the most physically demanding activities for wheelchair users. The specific dimensions ensure that a person can position their wheelchair alongside the toilet and transfer laterally using the grab bars for support. The 16-to-18-inch centerline distance positions the toilet within arm's reach of the side grab bar. The clear floor space allows the wheelchair to be positioned for a side transfer.

What plan reviewers look for

Plan reviewers dimension the accessible toilet compartment on the enlarged restroom plan. They check the water closet centerline distance from the side wall (16-18 inches), the clear floor space dimensions (60 by 56/59 inches), grab bar lengths and positions, and that no obstructions (lavatories, dispensers, pipes) encroach into the required clearances. This is one of the most detail-intensive accessibility checks.

Common violations

Water closet centerline outside 16-18 inch range
The toilet is centered at 15 inches or 20 inches from the side wall instead of the required 16-to-18 inch range. Even a 1-inch deviation affects the usability of the grab bars for transfers.
Clear floor space obstructed
A lavatory, trash receptacle, or toilet paper dispenser encroaches into the 60-by-56-inch clear floor space required at the water closet.
Grab bars missing or wrong length
The restroom plan does not show grab bars, or the bars are shorter than the required 42 inches (side) and 36 inches (rear). Some plans show grab bars but do not dimension their position relative to the toilet and walls.
Compliance tip
Draw the accessible toilet compartment at an enlarged scale (1/4 inch or larger) with all critical dimensions: centerline, clear floor space, grab bar lengths and mounting heights (33-36 inches AFF), and seat height (17-19 inches). Verify that accessories do not encroach into required clearances.
