Section 1015.1/Guards

IBC 1015 requires guards at open-sided walking surfaces, mezzanines, stairways, ramps, and landings more than 30 inches above the floor or grade below.

What this section requires

Guards must be provided along open-sided walking surfaces, including mezzanines, equipment platforms, stairs, ramps, and landings that are located more than 30 inches above the floor or grade below. Guards must be at least 42 inches high measured vertically from the leading edge of the stair tread, walking surface, or seat. Guard openings must not allow passage of a 4-inch sphere.

Why this section exists

Falls from elevation are one of the leading causes of serious injury and death in buildings. Guards prevent occupants from accidentally falling from elevated walking surfaces, stairs, and platforms. The 42-inch height is based on the center of gravity of a standing adult. The 4-inch sphere requirement prevents small children from passing through guard openings.

What plan reviewers look for

Plan reviewers check floor plans and sections for any open-sided condition more than 30 inches above the floor or grade below. They verify that guards are shown at those locations, that guard heights are dimensioned (42 inches minimum), and that the guard detail shows compliance with the 4-inch sphere opening limitation.

Common violations

Missing guards at mezzanines or landings
A mezzanine or intermediate landing is more than 30 inches above the adjacent floor but no guard is shown on the drawings.
Guard height less than 42 inches
Guards are shown at 36 inches, which meets residential code (IRC) but not the IBC commercial requirement of 42 inches.
Guard opening exceeds 4-inch sphere test
A horizontal cable rail or decorative guard has openings that would allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through. The spacing must be verified in the guard detail.
Compliance tip
Show guards on floor plans and sections wherever the elevation change exceeds 30 inches. Dimension the guard height at 42 inches. Include a guard detail showing the opening dimensions and referencing the 4-inch sphere limitation.
