Section 305.1/Clear Floor Space

ADA 2010 Section 305 defines the minimum 30-by-48-inch clear floor space required at accessible elements.

What this section requires

A clear floor space of 30 inches by 48 inches minimum must be provided at every accessible element (controls, fixtures, dispensers, counters). The clear floor space may be positioned for either a forward approach or a parallel (side) approach. The floor within the clear space must be stable, firm, and slip-resistant. The clear floor space may overlap with knee and toe clearance, turning space, and accessible routes.

Why this section exists

The 30-by-48-inch clear floor space represents the footprint of a standard wheelchair plus the space needed for a person to position themselves to use an element. This dimension is the building block of accessibility: it appears in the requirements for every fixture, control, counter, and operable element. Understanding this fundamental dimension is essential for accessible design.

What plan reviewers look for

Plan reviewers verify that a 30-by-48-inch clear space exists at every accessible element shown on the floor plan. They check the approach direction (forward or parallel) and verify that no obstructions (furniture, walls, other fixtures) block the clear space. They also check that the surface within the clear space is level (2% maximum slope in any direction).

Common violations

Clear floor space blocked by adjacent element
A drinking fountain, fire extinguisher cabinet, or other element blocks the clear floor space at an accessible control or fixture. Each element needs its own clear floor space that is not obstructed.
Wrong approach direction for element
A forward approach clear space is shown at an element that requires a parallel approach due to the physical configuration, or vice versa. The approach direction affects whether knee clearance is needed.
Compliance tip
Show the 30-by-48-inch clear floor space at every accessible element on the floor plan (even if not dimensioned individually, include them on the enlarged plans for restrooms, kitchens, and service counters). Verify approach direction matches the element configuration.

Related ADA requirements

Section 306 covers knee and toe clearance at elements with a forward approach. Section 308 covers reach ranges from the clear floor space. Section 304 covers turning space. The 30-by-48-inch dimension is referenced in virtually every other section of the ADA standards.
